The acknowledgment in a creed is all well; but when it comes to be the truth for one's own soul, stamping its value on our communion and also on our ways, men at once retreat back into some "dim religious light," where it is all forgotten and lost, merely owned verbally, but without power for the heart and life. Jehovah had cut down the former generation for their disobedience. Jehovah had blessed Israel, and would have them content and thankful instead of coveting their neighbour's goods.
